It's Time to Decorate and Declutter Your Home for Fall
Now that the seasons are changing, it’s a great time to decorate and declutter! Most of us decorate for the season; what better time is there to declutter if not now.
Pull out your fall décor, turn on some tunes, and let’s decorate and simplify our homes.
Seasonal Decor
Pumpkins, leaves, candles, blankets, mugs, and more. When we decorate for fall and get in the spirit of the season, it’s a great time to declutter any of the decorations that didn’t really bring us joy from the previous season.
If you don’t find any decorations to declutter, that’s okay too! Enjoy this time changing out your décor and creating a cozy, comfy, and warm environment for yourself and your family. Light one of your fall-scented candles and warm up some tea. Pumpkin or vanilla spice, cinnamon apple, or whatever your fall-flavor-of-choice may be.
Seasonal Clothing
What an ideal time to purge your wardrobe. My family rotates our clothing for the seasons, and we group spring with summer and fall with winter. You can call it a little seasonal switchover if you will.
We use the same totes when we swap our clothing. When fall and winter clothing comes out of the tote, our spring and summer clothing goes in. Our drawers and closets change from bright and light colors to deep and warm. We love it.
We also utilize this time to consider decluttering some of our spring and summer items. If it didn’t fit well, if we didn’t wear it, if we don’t really like it anymore; it goes into a donation box.
At this point in the process, you’ve already physically handled these items when switching them over and it’s the perfect time to re-evaluate what you have and what you want to keep.
Seasonal Accessories
Our fall and winter accessories such as winter boots, scarves, gloves, and hats are stored and packed away with our clothing. This is the perfect opportunity to declutter what you didn’t use the year prior.
A few questions you can ask yourself when it comes to decluttering your seasonal accessories:
- Do you actually wear the winter gear you own?
- Are you holding onto any items with the thought that your ideal self or fantasy self would wear them?
- Do you prefer one or two of the items over the rest?
Decluttering our seasonal accessories can help make getting ready easier. It reduces the decisions we have to make and simplifies the process of getting ready. If you prefer one item over the other and rarely chose the second option, why keep it? Love what you have and use what you love.
Seasonal Bedding and Linens
It’s time to pull out those warmer comforters, heavier quilts, flannel sheets, or seasonal designs that you have stored away. Take the time to get your home feeling comfy and cozy for fall if this is something you do in your home.
Before I really started practicing minimalism, bedding and linens were one of my addictions. I LOVE ME A SOFT, BIG, FLUFFY, AMAZING, BEAUTIFUL, DECORATIVE BLANKET. However, I realized how much storage space they were taking and how much work it was to maintain keeping the linens clean in our never-ending construction zone of a house.
I decluttered approximately 75% of our blankets and linens and still have plenty to enjoy. I no longer switch out our spare bedding seasonally and don’t plan to switch my daughter’s bedding either. She now has a hand-knit, thick, warm blanket one of my sisters made for her that will serve as an ideal blanket year-round.
I do however switch out my own bedding from a thinner comforter to a thicker, softer one for fall and winter.
Outdoor Furniture
If you have outdoor furniture or toys, give them a quick clean before storing them away for winter. If you don’t currently have storage space for these items, can you create a space? Can you brainstorm some storage ideas for them and designate a home for them before winter comes? By properly cleaning and storing these items, you’ll have less work to do in order to enjoy them when spring comes back around.
While cleaning up your yard and outdoor items, are there any items that you can declutter? For our family personally, there are a few outdoor toys that my daughter has outgrown that we will try to rehome before the winter arrives. By us decluttering the items that no longer serve us, we are giving another family the opportunity to find joy from them.
Kitchen
When it comes to switching out kitchen items for the changing seasons, ours has become much easier to manage. I decluttered a lot of our fall kitchen items including fall plates, serving spoon trays, and specialty cups.
Now, I simply place a few small pumpkins throughout the kitchen and swap out our hand towels and mugs to give it just enough of a fall vibe.
If you do a lot of cooking or baking in the fall, this is a natural time to clean out your fridge and pantry. By doing so, you’ll be able to make fall baking more enjoyable by knowing what you have versus what you need. Try to focus on keeping the kitchen tidy for when you’re ready to start your fall baking.
Decluttering your kitchen can help alleviate some of the stress that comes with this time of year. Allow the kitchen drawers, cabinets, and overall set-up to serve its’ purpose this year. Set up your kitchen in a way that makes sense to YOU. Try decluttering your countertops and building the habit to keep them clean and tidy to help make your cooking or baking experiences more enjoyable. It can be frustrating when you have to re-arrange your countertops to cook or bake something simple.
Home Office
With many of us working from home full time or even occasionally, decluttering our home offices and decorating them for fall can bring a new energy to your space. Declutter your desk and documents, create new systems for storage, and set your office space up in a way that is functional for you.
Then, add a little spice to your space by decorating with a few pumpkins, a candle or wax-warmer, or something that screams fall to you. I know some of you girls prefer the day-of-the-dead decor, skeletons, black cats, and spooky seasonal items instead of pumpkins and leaves – you do you and make your office space your own.
Toys
The beginning of fall is a great time to declutter your children’s toys. With the holidays quickly approaching, can you find toys that your children no longer enjoy playing with or have outgrown?
During this time of year, you can prioritize paying it forward and donating these toys to families in need, or regifting them to other children within your own family. Donating or regifting second-hand toys is a really great way to practice sustainability and save you money.
Conclusion
Embrace the changing of seasons and declutter as you decorate. The timing could not be better. Decorating our homes for fall can help us create a comfortable environment, but so can decluttering the excess in our homes. Are you ready to decorate and declutter for fall? I’d love to hear about what items you’re decluttering or see your personal cozy, fall aesthetic. Share what you’ve worked on below in the comments or on Facebook! I’m excited to hear from you.
