It's the First Day of Fall, Ya'll
Let me start this off by admitting that I don’t say “ya’ll,” but it sounded funny coming from me and made me *actually* laugh out loud, so I’m running with it.
Fall is my favorite season and I’m so excited it is hereeee! It is a great time to reflect on our intentions for the remainder of the year, assess our accomplishments, and reflect on the months that have passed.
What the First Day of Fall Symbolizes
The first day of fall is more than pumpkin lattes and maple scones, even though those are both delicious in my opinion. Let’s get back to our roots for a hot minute and think about the true meaning to the changing of the season. In essence, it is a meaningful day to celebrate and honor our harvest.
Now, we can choose to honor our hard work and literal harvest from our gardens. Or we can utilize it as a time to honor the hard work we’ve put towards living an intentional life. I think this option is warranted due to harvesting not being a part of everyone’s everyday life anymore. The first day of fall is the perfect opportunity to reflect on and celebrate the blessings in our lives.
Let's Reflect
Reflecting on the Previous Seasons
When the seasons change and fall arrives, consider reflecting on the previous few seasons. Consider what went well for you and what you think you could improve on in the upcoming season.
-
- What went well for me in the spring and summer?
-
- Did I reach the goals I had set?
-
- Was there anything that went poorly that I can try to work on bettering for next time?
You can also consider what you haven’t done or accomplished (that you wanted to or want to in the future) and set the intention to do those the following year during the appropriate time. This is a great time to write your intentions down. I write my list down in my “notes” app on my phone. I try to keep it as simple as possible in bullet point form, while keeping it as convenient as possible.
Reflecting on Our Relationships
Relationships are so important for our social, mental, and spiritual well-being. Connecting with others is something I think many of us fear in recent years due to spikes of anxiety. A lot of my personal friends and family have experienced an up-tick in their anxiety after the pandemic and the social isolation that accompanied it.
There is a natural gravitation toward connection, community, and gathering in the fall season. Take advantage of this and think of ways that you can connect with your loved ones while still being comfortable.
- Are there activities this fall that I can invite family or friends to join me in doing?
- Are there friends or family members I may have neglected unintentionally earlier in the year?
- How are my work relationships feeling? Are they genuine? Can I shift them somehow and build healthier relationships?
Reflecting on Our Health and Wellness
It is so common that we hear the women around us (and us included) saying we don’t have time or energy to pour into ourselves the way we deserve. The beginning of fall is a wonderful transition period to bring these questions to the forefront of your mind. Fall is the time to reflect, recharge, and make some changes.
- Have I been intentional with prioritizing my own health and wellness?
- How can I put my health and well-being first?
- Are there ways I can set goals to help me reach prioritizing my self-care?
Reflecting on Our Personal Development
As the season changes and the trees begin to let go of their leaves; can we do the same? Can we let go of our pent-up emotions or let go of things that are no longer serving us?
- Am I holding onto past resentment, frustration, or stress?
- Were there moments or situations earlier in the year that made me second-guess how I handled them?
- Did I handle problems or issues that arose poorly or with grace and wisdom?
- Have I been blindly reacting to issues? Or have I taken the time to pause, consider the other person’s perspective, and question and reflect on my own beliefs before responding?
Setting Intentions for This Fall Season
As previously mentioned, the beginning of fall is a great time to take a step back and look at your life from a new perspective. This is the time to set some new intentions to accomplish whatever that may be.
- What are my intentions for this fall?
- What do I want to take priority for fall?
- What do I want to accomplish this fall?
Now it’s Time to Act on Your Reflections
Taking the time to reflect on these questions is truly beneficial. However, reflecting on these questions is only the first step. You can simply think about these questions and how to resolve or tackle them to improve your life, or you can write them down. I suggest at least writing down your intentions for the upcoming season and setting some goals for yourself on how you want the season to go.
Do you want your fall to be full of fun and activities for you and your children? Or do you want to prioritize rest, recovery, and slowing down for the season?
We can’t ignore the fact that the holidays will be here before we know it. Is it important for you to schedule time to rest and recover before the holiday rush begins? If so, set that intention now and block out certain days that you have designated solely for rest. Not only block them out and set the intention but hold true to the intention as well. Treat these days as if they are as important as your other commitments, because they are.
Conclusion
This is a transition period and a chance for a new beginning; take advantage of this opportunity. Embrace the season and use this energy shift to make a change in your life.
The first day of fall is a great opportunity to set our intentions for the remainder of the year. Take the time to assess your previous accomplishments, reflect on the months that have passed, and celebrate the blessings you have in your life.
Thank you for taking the time to read and enjoy the first day of fall, ya’ll. 😊
